The best rap duos of all time: 20 pairs that shaped hip-hop
By the Rap Duo Video team

The best rap duos of all time, if you want five to start with: Eric B. & Rakim (from 1986), Gang Starr (from 1989), OutKast (from 1992), UGK (late 1980s) and Run the Jewels (from 2013). Below are 20 pairs in a table with members, city, active years and one record to press play on.
All 20 duos at a glance
The table runs roughly in the order each pair broke through, not by rank. Years are loose where a duo never formally split; the record column is the album we would hand a newcomer first.

Why each one belongs here
- Eric B. & Rakim: Rakim's relaxed, multi-syllable rhymes changed what a rap verse could sound like.
- DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince: Comic storytelling; "Parents Just Don't Understand" won the first Grammy awarded for a rap performance.
- EPMD: Unhurried flows over funk loops; the initials mean Erick and Parrish Making Dollars.
- Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock: The title track is still a staple at every party that plays old-school hip-hop.
- Gang Starr: Premier's chopped samples and scratched choruses framed Guru's level voice perfectly.
- Pete Rock & CL Smooth: Brass and soul loops; "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" remains a standard.
- Kris Kross: "Jump" spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the backwards clothes went with it.
- 8Ball & MJG: Slow, smooth Southern storytelling that later Memphis and Houston acts built on.
- UGK: Pimp C's production and Bun B's precise verses put Texas rap on the national map.
- Mobb Deep: Cold, cinematic street rap; the "Shook Ones, Pt. II" beat is recognisable in two notes.
- Capone-N-Noreaga: A rugged Queens debut that became a touchstone of late-90s New York street rap.
- OutKast: Opposite styles that fit; Speakerboxxx/The Love Below won the Grammy for Album of the Year.
- Black Star: One album that set the tone for late-90s independent rap.
- Method Man & Redman: Pure chemistry and jokes, enough to carry a comedy film of their own.
- Clipse: Sparse, metallic Neptunes beats under two sharp writers trading cold verses.
- Run the Jewels: Two veterans who teamed up late and made loud, political, joyful records.
- Armand Hammer: Dense, literary underground rap that rewards a second and third listen.
- Rae Sremmurd: "Black Beatles" topped the Hot 100 in 2016 as the soundtrack to a viral challenge.
- City Girls: Loud, funny and endlessly quotable; the best-known female rap duo of recent years.
- EarthGang: Playful, colourful Atlanta rap with a lot of OutKast in its family tree.
What great rap duos have in common
A rapper and a sound. Many of the early pairs split the work: one voice on the mic, one person building the music. Eric B. & Rakim, Gang Starr and Pete Rock & CL Smooth all worked that way, and in each case the producer is as famous as the MC.
Two styles that click. André 3000 and Big Boi never sounded alike, and that is exactly why OutKast worked. UGK, Run the Jewels and EarthGang follow the same logic: two different energies keep a whole album from feeling like one long verse.
Years of history. Brothers (Clipse, Rae Sremmurd), old school friends (Mobb Deep, Kris Kross, City Girls) and an uncle and nephew (Quavo and Takeoff) pass the mic mid-bar without looking, because they have done it since they were teenagers.
Room for fun. Method Man & Redman and DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince showed that a pair can be funny without becoming a novelty act. The back-and-forth is half the show.
Female rap duos
Women have led rap groups since the 1980s, but true two-person female acts are rarer than you might expect. City Girls are the clear modern example: Yung Miami and JT built a following on brash humour and hooks that end up as captions, with Period (2018) as the debut to start from.
Salt-N-Pepa come up in almost every conversation about female rap pairs, and rightly so, but with DJ Spinderella they are usually counted as a trio, which is why they sit outside our table.
Newer duos (2015+)
The duo format did not fade with the CD era. Rae Sremmurd arrived with SremmLife in 2015 and scored a chart-topping single a year later. City Girls followed in 2018, and EarthGang's Mirrorland (2019) brought a bright, playful Atlanta sound to a wider audience.
On the underground side, Armand Hammer turned dense writing into a cult following, and older pairs keep coming back: Black Star released new music in 2022 and Clipse returned with a new album in 2025. Run the Jewels, Rae Sremmurd, EarthGang and Armand Hammer have all released records in the 2020s.
Honourable mention: Unc & Phew
Quavo and Takeoff spent most of their careers in the trio Migos, so they stay off the main list. In 2022 they released music as the duo Unc & Phew, including the single "Hotel Lobby" and the album Only Built for Infinity Links, shortly before Takeoff's death. Read how the two are related in Quavo and Takeoff, explained, and the story of the orange session in the Hotel Lobby song piece.
Start a duo of your own
Every pair above began as two people fooling around with a microphone. You can skip the rehearsals: on Rap Duo Video, add one photo of you and one of a friend, sibling or partner, and the studio writes a new song and puts both of you on stage rapping it. The default stage is the orange Tangerine Booth from the Hotel Lobby AI trend.
